Learn how to in 16 steps.Where it all beganThe word ‘collage’ derives from the French word ‘glue’, and was first popularised by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in 1912. This wasn’t the first time the word collage had been used, or even the first time a collage had been created. But this era was when it became mainstream in the art world.After the first world war, the Dada movement made collage art more popular still. Starting in Switzerland, Dadaists began creating artwork known as photomontages. This art movement resulted in satirical and nonsensical artwork and has been described as a reaction to the horrors of the war.This period paved the way for collages to become a fundamental part of the art world and is an important moment in history. If the Dada movement hadn’t evolved, art today may look very different.Collages therefore became a form of self-expression for creatives in the 1920s, and some of the greatest artists have dabbled in it – Hannah Hoch, Kurt Schwitters and John Stezaker to name a few.Kurt Schwitters argues that everyday materials including wood, plasterboard, wheels, cotton are equal in expression to paint itself, suggesting that an artist can use any materials, and it would still be art. Creating a collage is no less an artform than painting a picture.Sure, you could say that someone is just cutting out some images and sticking them together. But a collage is creativity at its finest. Having to imagine a concept, something that’s unrealistic and isn’t real, then putting it on paper, using elements to express an emotion or tell a story.The advances of technology There are many creatives today creating collages, but with one big difference; they’re digitally created.Technology has advanced a fair bit in the last half a century. It wasn’t until the Collage, (French: “pasting”), artistic technique of applying manufactured, printed, or “found” materials, such as bits of newspaper, fabric, wallpaper, etc., to a panel or canvas, frequently in combination with painting. In the 19th century, papiers collés were created from papers cut out and put together to form decorative compositions. In about 1912–13 Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque extended this technique, combining fragments of paper, wood, linoleum, and newspapers with oil paint on canvas to form subtle and interesting abstract or semiabstract compositions. The development of the collage by Picasso and Braque contributed largely to the transition from Analytical to Synthetic Cubism.The word collage was first used to refer to works by Dada and Surrealist artists, especially Max Ernst. His collages were composed of old engravings and prints that had been skillfully cut and pasted together to form disquietingly irrational images. Kurt Schwitters’ collages utilized pieces of string, rags, wood, wire, nails, and papers. Henri Matisse’s imaginative papiers découpés, the works of his last years, were an adaptation of the collage technique. The American artist Joseph Cornell expanded upon the collage technique in his intimate, mysterious shadow boxes. In the 1960s collage was employed as a major form of Pop art. The Pop-art collage was brought to its high point in the 1960s by Robert Rauschenberg, who combined newspaper and magazine photographs with silk-screen printing to produce images that are amalgams of American history and popular culture.

Something to Collage OnThe last thing you need is a base to use for your collage, which in the art world is known as a substrate. {You can sound like a very fancy professional artist when you use this word!}Here are some of the things you can use as a substrate:Cardboard – easy to find!Cardstock – great for small collages + will help reduce wrinklingPosterboard – inexpensive and easy to findFoam Board – sturdier than posterboard but prone to dentingHardboard – sold at home improvement stores, very heavy so best for small projectsAny Kind of Wood – sold at art stores and home improvement stores – pine will typically be a good budget friendly and light weight optionCanvas Panels – Sold at art stores everywhere. I recommend the panels over stretched canvases because they will be a sturdier surface.If this is your first collage, don’t worry too much about what you use at first as a substrate, the important thing is you have something to glue your images and collage papers down to!You could even make collages in a three-ring binder or a composition notebook like I do for my many gluebooks!Scissors & Other Cutting ToolsWhat can I say about scissors? They are useful to have, but you can always rip the paper instead.There are tons of different types of scissors you can use and really at the end of the day it just comes down to your own personal preference and what feels good in your hands. I like 6″ scissors for cutting paper the best, but will sometimes use smaller scissors too if I’m fussy cutting stuff out.If you want to fussy cut out different images from magazines or photos, you can also use an X-acto knife and cutting mat for more precision, but be careful – those knives are sharp! Always turn the paper and not the knife when cutting!Generally, I only use scissors or rip the paper, because X-acto knives are dangerous (at least for someone clumsy like me!) – and also because that would mean having to be somewhere I could cut it. There are a few main types of collage typically referenced: paper collage (also called “papier collé,” it involves only pasted paper), mixed media collage, digital collage, 3 dimensional collage (also called “assemblages”) and photo montage collage.Brief History of Collage:You might be familiar with collage from elementary school crafts, but it actually has a rich history – with some debate as to its true origins. The term “collage” is said to have been coined in the 1910’s by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, pioneers of the Cubist movement. (“Collage” comes from the French verb, “coller,” which means “to stick together” or “to glue”). Collage continued to gain momentum with the post-WWI Dada movement (which was influenced by Cubism, as well as Futurism, Constructivism, and Expressionism). Dada artists produced work in many media, which included collage. Although these artists/movements are typically referenced as the origin of collage – when collage was first used as an artist’s technique – collage as a process is said to have actually been practised much earlier than this. In fact, Japanese artists stuck paper to silk as early as the 1100’s, while in Europe the first paper collage was recorded in the 1400’s. In the Victorian era, collage scrapbooks and collage Valentine’s Day cards were a popular craft.
