23:16:09 (permalink) You can do it within GT Pro. Import the song to a track, making sure that the 'adjust imported audio to project tempo' switch is turned off. Then select a region, play it back and listen for beats. Fine tune the selection so that it has a discernable number of whole beats and remember this number. Click on the tempo symbol and use the tempo calculator. You'll have to enter the time signature and the number of beats in your selection. You could also use the tap tempo function, but (at least in GT Pro 2) you can't listen to the song and tap at the same time. If you play the song in another application, like Winamp or WMP, you can then use GT Pro's tap tempo function to get the tempo. Other ways -- if you have Cool Edit, it also has a 'calculate tempo from selection' feature. And there are a couple of free or inexpensive tempo calculator apps available on the net. I used to use one caller "BPM". Google is our friend. (all politics aside...) Once you find the magic number, you can change your project tempo to match. (Turn off 'stretch audio' when you change the tempo!!!) But what if you didn't have this source track? What if you were trying to create something original and just needed to have a metronome ticking away to give your inspiration a pulse?
