Like finding an “authentic Philly cheesesteak” outside of Philly that doesn’t come gunked up with bell peppers, mushrooms, or worse, getting a lobster roll done the way you remember them from family road trips through Maine back in the day can be difficult. But Luke’s was always dependable that way. Simple, uncomplicated, and delicious.But not cheap. Back when the joint first opened, I think they were letting the small lobster rolls go for something like $15. Ask any Philadelphian where their favorite cheesesteak spot is and they're sure to have an answer at the ready. But most Philadelphians, including me, will be quick to follow up with, “But that’s not the best Philly sandwich—if you want the best, get a roast pork.” It’s easy to see why it’s a local favorite: A perfect roast pork sandwich is bursting at the seams with thin slices of succulent pork shoulder, melt-in your mouth garlicky broccoli rabe, and sharp provolone cheese, all finished with a ladle of savory jus that drips into the pillowy-yet-crusty bread (preferably a Sarcone’s roll, but I’ll get into that later). And don’t forget the optional condiments like long hot peppers or roasted red peppers you can throw on top. In my humble South Philly opinion, this juicy, flavorful mess of a sandwich is better than a cheesesteak. Serious Eats / Amanda Suarez The roast pork sandwich has roots in the cuisine of the Abruzzo region of Italy, whose people immigrated en masse to Philadelphia back in the early 20th century, settling primarily in South Philly. Domenico Bucci set up the first roast pork shop in Philly back in 1930. The shop is now called John’s Roast Pork, and it’s still one of the most popular sandwich shops in the area. There are many other great versions served in Philly. You can’t go wrong with the ones served up at Campo’s,, or Tony Luke’s, but my hands-down favorite is Tommy DiNic’s roast pork sandwich. I’ve been enjoying roast pork sandwiches at their counter at the Reading Terminal Market since I was a kid. Everytime I go back home to visit family in Philly, I make a point of braving the market’s bustling crowds and stopping at DiNic’s to savor one. Their hoagies, chicken cutlet parms, hot roast porks, and all-day breakfast sandwiches are beyond impressive, they are a gold standard in the city. The Philly favorite for ginormous breakfast sandwiches and even bigger lunch options has been such a hit since it opened in 2017 that it has a second outpost in Fishtown. There, all the sandwiches you’d find at the Washington Square West location are available to eat in or take to-go. So check it out if you’re in the neighborhood.And hey, speaking of new stuff in Rittenhouse …Luke’s Lobster Is ReopeningLobster rolls / Photograph courtesy of Luke’s LobsterAfter a long, cold winter spent remodeling and getting ready for spring, the Rittenhouse location of Luke’s Lobster is reopening today at 30 South 17th Street.Located downstairs near the corner of 17th and Moravian, this spot has always been a solid destination for those looking for a lobster roll done the way the Lobster God intended: a New England-style bun, buttered and crisped on the flat grill, a little mayo, a lot of lobster, and nothing more. Like finding an “authentic Philly cheesesteak” outside of Philly that doesn’t come gunked up with bell peppers, mushrooms, or worse, getting a lobster roll done the way you remember them from family road trips through Maine back in the day can be difficult. But Luke’s was always dependable that way. Simple, uncomplicated, and delicious.But not cheap. Back when the joint first opened, I think they were letting the small lobster rolls go for something like $15. Now, they’re more like $28 — which feels absolutely insane to me, but that’s just the way of the world right now.Still, for the grand reopening, they’re offering a free small clam chowder with the purchase of any six-ounce lobster roll, so if you’re down for recapturing some fleeting flavors of summers past (and have a little green to drop to make those wishes come true), you might want to think about lining up early. After 82 years in business, Lucio J. Mancuso & Son is selling sandwiches.Carefully constructed on fresh rolls from nearby Cacia’s bakery, they’re available in small or large. For now it’s just hoagies, but the back kitchen is being outfitted with an oven, so the future menu will include hot options like roast pork and chicken cutlet.Nothing else about the shop will change, said Jake Santini, the 21-year-old in charge of introducing made-to-order food to the East Passyunk staple, open since 1940.“Business has been good. We’re going to keep everything the same,” Santini said. “We’re just adding the sandwiches, that’s it.”The time-honored lineup of old-school cans, jars, pasta, and spices will remain on shelves, and the famous fresh mozzarella and ricotta will still be made on site daily. These traditions started with founder Lucio Mancuso, and continued from 1971 onward under second-generation owner Philip Mancuso.When Phil died in February 2021, the future of the store was uncertain, with his widow Edda Mancuso telling The Inquirer, “There’s no way I can keep this open, I’m not young anymore.”Yet the shop didn’t close, and it now has new owners, according to Santini. They are Jimmy Cialella, a former mozzarella-making apprentice (and Santini’s uncle) who runs Jimmy’s Water Ice at Front and Wolf, and his buddy John Denisi. Edda Mancuso still comes in a few times a week, and helps out when questions arise.“They didn’t want to see it fade away,” Santini said.
