#1 In an almost absolutely non-shocking move, Adobe has declared their Shockwave software plugin for accelerating web content to be going the way of the dodo when it comes to official support. The move follows the internet's advancement, where HTML5 and WebGL have superseded the usage of the proprietary Shockwave solution. A more open approach means there are a whole lot more players working on and paying attention to others' mistakes, and means there are a much higher number of developers working with the tools at any one timer than Adobe ever could dedicate engineers to.Following its statement on Shockwave being dead, Adobe pulled the downloads from their website, meaning that no additional versions or downloads of the software are coming from the company itself. Enterprise customers won't be left hanging, with a grace period of support from Adobe with new security updates for the remainder of their contracts. Current Shockwave-based content's future is unclear, but some content is bound to become inaccessible to most users. Macromedia, Inc. announced on April 24, 2001, the immediate availability of Macromedia Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio, which will enable developers to bring 3D-enhanced Shockwave content to the Internet. The program features a new version of the Shockwave Multiuser Server, Havok physics engine for 3D game behaviors, support for Flash 5 and the ability to stream RealMedia content. 3D support in Director and Shockwave Player was jointly developed with Intel Corporation and is built on the Intel Internet 3D Graphics software. "With the authoring prowess of Director and the power and penetration of Macromedia Shockwave Player, the platform for delivering high-impact 3D Web experiences is now here." Users will benefit not only from the new 3D functionality, but also from such features as Flash 5 integration. With built-in support for RealAudio and RealVideo, Director will let developers deliver audio and video content using the leading streaming format on the Web. With Shockwave Multiuser Server 3, developers can now utilize server-side scripting capabilities, UDP networking and have 2000 users simultaneously view their Shockwave multiuser content. Macromedia Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio is immediately available for both Macintosh and Windows platforms. The studio is priced at $1199 for new users, $199 for users upgrading from Director 8 and $399 for users upgrading from Director versions 5 through 7. 2025-04-08My Firefox Add-ons Manager shows two entries for Shockwave Flash:Shockwave Flash 11.8.800.94Shockwave Flash 9.0.45.0For the version 9 entry, there is a warning "Shockwave Flash is known to be vulnerable and should be updated". If I click the "Disable" button for this, it also disables the version 11 entry. Then, if I return to Add-ons mananager, it will show both versions 9 and 11 disabled. If I click "Enable" for the version 11 entry, then both versions 9 and 11 are enabled. This is with Firefox 22.0, Windows XP SP3. I also have Adobe Creative Suite CS3 and Adobe Reader XI installed.I ran a file search for files with the string "NPSWF32" in the name. Apart from the version 11 dll ("NPSWF32_11_8_800_94.dll"), there were six files named "NPSWF32.dll" on my system in these locations:C:\i386C:\WINDOWS\system32C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0\ReaderC:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS3\browser\pluginsC:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Contribute CS3\Configuration\PluginsC:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS3\configuration\PluginsC:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS3\AIK\runtimes\air\win\Adobe AIR\Versions\1.0I do not know whether all of the above copies of the DLL are necessary or causing problems; however, I do wonder whether Firefox's warning about a real or phantom Flash version 9 security problem should be addessed. If so, what do I do?
