Tool to help troubleshoot VoIP rollouts, VoIP & Network Quality Manager only works for Cisco-based systems (but that shouldn’t really be a problem, because who doesn’t use Cisco devices in this space—am I right?).9. NetScanToolsNetScanTools comes in Basic, LE, and Pro packages, each of which offers network monitoring tools. The NetScanTools Basic edition is another freeware option for home users and those managing smaller networks, giving you several powerful networking tools in a single bundle. The LE package is designed specifically for those working in law enforcement and was created with input from actual law enforcement professionals—resulting in a program oriented around “cases.” All queries are automatically documented, time-stamped, and logged, and the reports generated by the application are unfussy, direct, and results-driven.NetScanTools Pro brings more than 40 networking tools—including configuration functions, security testing services, tools for data gathering, and network and service diagnostics—into one central interface. NetScanTools collects a lot of data automatically and is specifically designed to save you time. A great deal of information can be gleaned from examining DNS entries, scanning hosts, and doing Whois lookups, but running those tasks individually is time-consuming. NetScanTools creates automated reports to provide a range of detailed information, including not only Whois records and DNS details, but also blacklists, traceroutes, port scans, and more. Testing and packet tools allow you to illuminate potential problem areas on the network, as well. While not as expansive or comprehensive as some of the other applications listed here, NetScanTools is a cost-effective and affordable bundle of network management tools. However, it’s only available for users running Windows systems.10. 31 Aug 2010 Have you ever had a need to run a program and get a relatively small amount of data just to do your job but end up getting caught in the complexity of the application and not getting what you need after all? That’s happened to me a bunch.Well, NorthWest Performance Software (makers of a long-time favorite of mine: NetScanTools Pro) has a new tool that helps resolves this problem called NetScanTools LE. Designed for law enforcement investigators (hence the “LE”), prosecutors, corporate security folks and the like, NetScanTools packages the ability to gather information on IP addresses, domain names, hostnames, and email addresses all in one concise program. It’s for the non-technical types who just want the basics…get in and get out. Given its investigative approach, the tool is case driven and includes timestamps and even packet capturing to help investigators prove they did what they say they did while gathering their data. It’s really inexpensive to boot.Included functions are:ping sweepingport scanningIP to country mappingemail validationWhois lookupsRBL checkstext-only Web page grabber (I really like this)The following screenshot shows the clean interface of NetScanTools LE:While I’m on the subject of cool tools, if you’ve never checked out NetScanTools Pro, you really should. It’s chock full of even more utilities (all in one place, albeit bordering on the complex) those of us in IT and security can benefit from. I have a need for such tools on practically a daily basis.Furthermore, Kirk Thomas who heads up NorthWest Performance Software is very attentive and eager to get feedback on his products in order to make them better. And based on our conversations I like how he thinks.NetScanTools Basic Edition Overview - YouTube

Double click on nstpro.exe. WinPcap or Npcap (in WinPcap compatibility mode) must be installed on the host computer. Are the executable files digitally signed? Yes, all executable files are digitally signed so that you can be sure of their origin. I already have an installed NetScanTools Pro v11 license. Does the USB license replace it? No, we treat them as separate licenses -- they are separate programs. We can synchronize the maintenance plans if you desire for a substantial cost savings. Why can't I just put the regular installed version on a USB Flash Drive? It won't work because all settings are saved in the Registry of the computer it was originally installed on and the program will not be portable, ie. it will not work on another computer because thoseNetScanTools (tm) Basic Edition Released
Registry settings are not present. Also, WinPcap or Npcap must be installed on the computer. Are there any speed issues with running from a USB Flash Drive? Yes. USB Flash Drives are slower than hard drives so you will notice a certain amount of delay in repainting some of the tool windows as you switch between them. Since we save files to the USB drive instead of the hard drive, any of those read/write operations will be slower. Does this version of NetScanTools Pro leave any tracks on the computer it was used on? We have worked to make sure that does not happen and to the best of our knowledge it should not. However, be aware that the operating system does keep a record of all USB devices ever plugged into it in the registry and it keeps a record of most recently used programs. If you want to be completely anonymous you will have to edit the registry to remove those tracks. I own a license for the current version of NetScanTools Pro. Why is there a cost for the USB version? We are supplying a physical USB Flash Drive. The binary files are different between the two versions and are mostly incompatible. Both the USB and Installed versions are released within days of each other so that the version numbers and functionality remains the same. Are there any functions in the installed version that do not work in the USB version? To the best of our knowledge all functions operate the same. Can I put other things on the USB Flash Drive? Yes, but be careful not to fill it up or the programs may not work properly. Can I move NetScanTools Pro to another flash drive? Yes, but it does require our assistance. You are licensed to have this software on one USB Flash Drive. Can I make a backup of the contents of the USB Flash Drive? Yes, we strongly encourage backups. The backup is only for yourself and must not be shared. How do I make a backup? Copy the whole drive contents to your backup media after you have completed the product registration process -- a CDR is recommended. We can help you restore it to another drive if necessary. Is there a maintenance plan for this version? Yes, the terms and conditions are the same as for the installed version. Your maintenance plan begins at that time of receipt of the USB flash drive. I already have v11 with an active maintenance plan. If I get the USB version can I synchronize the maintenance plans so that they both expire at the same time? Yes, we can provide special pricing at substantial savings so that both plans will have the same expiration date. What if I lose the USB Flash Drive? There will be a replacement fee to cover the drive cost and a new license key issued. Make a backup so you can reduce the cost and time it takes to. NetScanTools Basic Edition, free download. 06 Feb 2017 In my years performing independent network security assessments, one thing that has really stood out to me is the lack of network insight. Regardless of the size of the organization, the industry in which they operate, and the level of security maturity, in most cases, I see IT and security shops with very little:documentationinventoryconfiguration standardslogging and alerting outside of basic resource monitoringWhat this means – and what it can easily lead to – is incidents and subsequent breaches that may or may not be detected. These gaps combined with today’s network complexities are virtually guaranteed to create unnecessary business risks. In the spirit of having good tools to make your job easier, Northwest Performance Software has a program called Managed Switch Port Mapping Tool that can help put you on the right track in terms of getting to know your network environment, improving your visibility, and managing your ongoing changes. It’s a tool that I have used off and on for years in conjunction with their popular toolset called NetScanTools Pro. The Managed Switch Port Mapping Tool is pretty straightforward – it simply uses SNMP to map out network switches which can provide a ton of information about entire network segments – information that often gets taken for granted. Here’s a sample screenshot:We work in a world where vendors are pushing SIEM, CASB, and Next-Gen Whatevers while, at the same time, we don’t even have the network and security basics down pat. We’re too busy spending time and money on the latest and greatest technologies when we need to just go back and do more to get a grasp on the core essentials of the network. Once that has been achieved, then – and only then – does it make sense to buy into what we’re being sold.Comments
