Two things turned it into a meme: a hilarious awful promo video gone viral, and a hilarious awful application available for free download. While many would argue the video disproves this aphorism, the video's plot involves a man (played by Microsoft engineer Dan Morris) who is struggling to find an angle for advertising some glow in the dark towels. While complaining about this in his kitchen in the morning, his eerily chipper daughter begins to sing. She's using songsmith on what is pretty clearly a Macbook Pro covered in stickers. It remains unknown exactly why Microsoft used an Apple laptop in the commercial, but the crowd on YouTube loved it. To quote user rmbgi, "I thinks this works better with a Macbook pro :) The apple logo is covered with stickers LOL…" Anyway, the dad goes and sits with his daughter. He is blown away by the quality of the program, and, perhaps not understanding that a free trial is available for download, steals the laptop from his daughter.The video cuts to the next scene, which is in a coffee shop. He has just finished recording the first take of his glow-in-the-dark towel jingle, and begins to play it back. Right as he hits play, a rockstar (played by Microsoft Engineer Sumit Basu) and a waitress (neither of which seem to have any respect for his privacy) watch over his shoulder. After a few bars, the rock star says the classic, "Microsoft, huh? So it's pretty easy to use?"The rock star later records his own song in the coffee shop, and the man uses songsmith to create a jingle for the glow-in-the-dark towels, and everyone goes home happy. It is a huge success, and everyone lives happily ever after. This video in itself would have been viral, but what turned this into a meme was the fact that users could download the app and play with it themselves. SpreadUsers did download Songsmith. Unsurprisingly, it is not very good at what it is supposed to do. But uploading videos of yourself singing into a computer and the computer butchering it doesn't do the app's suckitude justice. That is why people instead isolated the vocals track from various famous songs and fed them into Songsmith. Songsmith then does what it was programmed to do, which might as well have been "prove that Songsmith stinks." Songsmith

En YouTube ya existen videos de canciones clásicas que utilizan el Songsmith y creanme que los resultados dan mucho que desear. Con los resultados obtenidos me viene a la mente aquel "infomercial" en el que promocionaban lecciones para aprender a tocar el teclado, que podían reproducir una pista y ponerse a bailar (con esas lecciones según ibas a convertirte en el alma de las fiestas, ¡sí como no!). En el siguiente video puedes observar los resultados de éste programa con una de las mejores canciones de Radiohead, "Creep": Como pudieron ver los resultados fueron "fatales". Algo que me resultó muy gracioso es que el comercial que Microsoft utiliza para promover su software es tan exagerado, que ya tiene una parodia. Microsoft Songsmith: ¡un software destinado al olvido! Actualmente la tecnología está fundamentalmente pensada para hacer cosas anteriormente impensables y/o simplemente para facilitar la vida de las personas. Con base en esto surgen miles de programas de computadora que pretenden innovar en algún tema, para facilitar alguna tarea y, si se puede, obtener alguna ganancia económica. Sin embargo muchos de los programas no tienen mucho sentido, funcionalidad, mejoras o simplemente popularidad y es por esto que terminan prácticamente en el limbo. Recientemente Microsoft ha lanzado un programa llamado Songsmith que desde mi punto de vista terminará ahí, en el limbo, a menos que se le hagan mejoras y se convierta en un software útil y popular. Si no sabes para que sirve el Songsmith pues te digo en simples palabras que es un software que sirve para reproducir música mientras tu cantas con el micrófono del PC. De acuerdo con esto seguramente estarás pensando, ¿y eso es nuevo?, ¿qué tiene de innovador?. Respondiendo a éstas preguntas pues te comento que según sus creadores el programa puede reproducir la música que tu canto necesita, es decir, si mientras cantas cambias el tono o el ritmo, la música cambiará y se adaptará lo mejor posible a la forma en que estas cantando. Ésta es la forma en que te ofrecen el producto, pero desafortunadamente está completamente fuera de lugar. Microsoft promociona su producto con un comercial que en lo personal considero exagerado y ridículo. En resumen, el comercial trata de un papá que ve a su hija usando el programa y le gusta tanto que le roba su Laptop y se la lleva al trabajo para cantar mientras que el software le compone la música. Claramente se puede esperar que los resultados obtenidos con el software no sean ni cercanos a lo mostrado
