Judon is entering the final season of his four-year deal New England Patriots star edge rusher Matthew Judon said all the right things a month ago about his contract situation. But that didn't change the fact that he's reportedly unhappy with his current deal, which has him set to be paid well below the top players at his position with a $6.5 million base salary. And FOX Sports' Henry McKenna dropped a new detail Tuesday in regards to Judon's contract dispute with the Patriots."Matthew Judon has asked for a new contract and the Patriots have made an offer, according to a source close to the situation," McKenna wrote on the X platform. "But they are not currently close to agreeing to a new deal." Story continues below advertisement Judon has watched a bevy of his teammates get new deals this offseason, but him and Davon Godchaux, who has been outspoken about his contract, haven't received what they want from the Patriots. It was just last offseason the Patriots reworked Judon's contract to give him an immediate pay bump from $2 million to $14 million in guaranteed money for the 2023 season. But the Patriots might not be inclined to do that again with Judon, who is entering the final year of his four-year deal. He turns 32 years old next month and is coming off a major injury after being limited to four games last season due to a torn bicep. Judon has been a big-time producer when healthy, though. He was a Pro Bowler in his first two seasons with the Patriots and led the team in sacks both of those years, including accumulating 15.5 sacks in the 2021 season.Given the way the Patriots have handed out extensions to their own players this offseason, Judon probably feels he should be rewarded, too. And that was really part of it at the end, was that they were just sick of him. They felt like there was the public-facing Judon, and then there was Judon behind the scenes. And Judon behind the scenes has sort of become a little bit of an operator, and his act had worn thin with people inside the building..."And it's something that was an issue in Baltimore too, quite honestly. So it's not saying he's a bad guy, but there was some of this, again, like this sort of cheerleader stuff on social media that a lot of people in the organization would roll their eyes at. And then when he became a problem this summer, there was, 'all right, like, what do we do to move him off the roster now, because we're trying to build a new program, and we don't want this hovering over us.'"So I think there was a little bit more to the Judon trade than just the contract situation."Judon amassed 28 total sacks over the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He also made all four Pro Bowls from 2019-2022.The 32-year-old was limited to just four games last year after suffering a torn biceps.Obviously, there are two sides to every story. Perhaps coaches and front-office folks had issues with Judon, but the linebacker could have had his own gripes with Patriots personnel as well.We do know that Judon wasn't enamored with the remainder of his contract, paying him $6.5 million over his final season."We have a market set by the highest guy, and then everyone falls in line until the next guy is up to breaks that contract. I was injured all last season, so that's not really where my market is. But I don't think it's $6.5 [million]," Judon said this summer (h/t Matt Geagan of WBZ News). The two sides talked contracts but ultimately could not come to an agreement. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler provided more information."New England made a contract offer to Judon this summer, which Judon did not accept, sources told Fowler."Judon had said on a recent podcast that he wrote out his own proposal to the Patriots

Atlanta Falcons' Matthew Judon. (AP Photo/Mike Stewart)APBy Lauren Campbell | [email protected] Judon never had a touchdown in the nine seasons he’s been in the NFL.That changed on Sunday. The Falcons linebacker intercepted Drew Lock and ran it back to the end zone in third quarter of Atlanta’s eventual 34-7 win over the New York Giants. It was Judon’s first ever score and it was made even more special because his son, Roman, was in attendance for the first time. “This the first game thatIi actually played on my son here. So that was good,” Judon told reporters after the game. “When you play this game, you’re kind of looked up to as heroes to many people. I’m a superhero to him and so with him being here, it’s just all the all the better.”It was a good day for Atlanta’s defense. Safety Jessie Bates III also had a pick-6 and the defense as a whole allowed the Giants to score just seven points. After 10 sacks as a unit in their first 11 games, they’ve amassed 16 in their last four. “We’re working hard,” Judon said. “When it pays off, that does feel good.”Judon, who was traded to the Falcons from the New England Patriots prior to the season, is having a strong first year in Atlanta. with 4.5 sacks and 20 solo tackles. From top-rated college recruit, to true freshman starter at Oklahoma, to USC matinee idol, to, now, a flagship NFL franchise’s next designated savior.“I know who I am,” Williams says, in a quiet moment in the Bears’ facility, after a scorching hot August camp practice. “I know what I like. I know what I like to do. I know where I like to go. I think that’s the first part—knowing who I am. The second part would be, I learned at a young age, I can’t make everybody happy. But he also knows that, in the years to come, he’ll have a chance to make a lot of people happy in America’s third-largest city. He’s aware that there’s truly only one way to make that happen. As his work overnight on Wednesday would indicate, he has a pretty good idea of how to make it happen, too.And if those on the outside don’t care to see that, that’s fine.Williams shrugs. They can think what they want to think.Twenty-one teams down on my camp trip, and lots to cover this week. So in The Takeaways, we’ve got for you …• How the second QB taken in the draft, Jayden Daniels, is earning the starting spot for the Washington Commanders.• What the Atlanta Falcons’ trade with the New England Patriots for Matthew Judon means for both franchises. • Why it’s a big week for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterbacks. But we’re starting with the first overall pick, preconceived notions, and a kid from a new generation
