Lastpass keepass import

Today is March 18th 2021. LastPass has recently changed the scope of its free tier. Due to new restrictions in functionality, a lot of users are on the hunt for a new password manager.As readers of this website might know, my favorite password manager is an open-source program, called Keepass. This short guide will help you to migrate from LastPass to Keepass. Figure 1: Migrate from LastPass to Keepass If you still need arguments why one should use a password manager, I can only recommend my fabulous How to password article and the How to use Keepass. 😎Option 1: export and import 🤓Fortunatly LastPass, such as any reasonable password manager service, provides the fucntionality to export all your stored data. You have the option to export stored usernames and passwords into a text file (CSV-file). Keepass on the other hand provides a potpourri of available import options.Attention: The resulting file is very sensible. It contains all your usernames and passwords in clear text! Do not put it on any cloud service or sync folder! Just leave it in your user directory.Usually I recommend to use KeepassXC. However, in this particular user case (import from LastPass) is the KeePass 2.XX for Windows client better equiped.Steps:Open LastPass and loginGo to “Account options” ➡️ “Advanced” ➡️ “Export” ➡️ “LastPass CSV file”Save the file (not in the cloud or sync folder)Open Keepass and your password libraryChoose from menu “File” ➡️ “Import”Select the appropiate service entry (e.g. “LastPass CSV”)When the import is finished save your Keepass libraryDelete the LastPass.csv file (do not just put it in the bin)Example: Clip 1: Select the LastPass.csv file in order to be able to press OK Option 2: by hand 😔You always have the option to create the needed account entries in Keepass by hand. Just open both programs next to each other and copy and paste the content from the accounts you want to transfer. Into this program but I can't deny that this program is gaining real legitimacy. It may be too small a sample group but multiple security-aware, tech-savvy people I know have been switching over to KeePass both at home and at work. KeePass is useful for keeping those kinds of passwords that you don't use everyday, but are important and know you'll need to find at some point. KeePass automatically generates 20-character passwords containing lowercase letters, uppercase letters, and numbers for new password entries.(Credit: KeePass)I strongly advise clicking on the password generator button within the add entry window and ticking the box to include special characters within the settings tab. I typically recommend creating passwords that are at least 20 characters and include both letter cases, numbers, and special characters. In future, I would like for KeePass to include special characters in its password generation default setting.From the add entry screen, you can choose an expiration date and time for your password. This is a cool feature I haven't seen on other password managers. If you want to remember to update your email password three months from now, you can specify that request when you create or edit the password.Also on the Settings screen, you can choose to generate a password using a pattern or using an algorithm. KeePass has instructions for generating passwords using these methods, but for most people, especially first-time password manager users, the 20-character passwords created by KeePass (with the special characters box checked) should be sufficient. One handy feature of the password generator is the password profile section. Clicking on the profiles dropdown menu allows you to choose whether to create new passwords based on the character parameters set by the last generated password, generate a fresh password based on the default settings, create hex keys using 40/128/256-bit settings, or generate a MAC address.
