Marie Tharp (1920-2006) worked as a geologist at the Lamont Geological Laboratory at Columbia. From the late 1940s she transferred onto paper data from sonars equipping ships exploring the Atlantic, thus creating the first maps of the ocean floor. Tharp and Heezen worked with an Austrian painter, Heinrich Berann (1915-1999), to produce in 1977 the first full map of the ocean floor.
