Back in February, Melly was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for allegedly shooting and killing his friends, YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser, and making the shooting appear as a drive-by shooting. Last month, it was revealed that the state of Florida would be seeking the death penalty against the Gifford, Fla. rapper.Melly may be behind bars, but he's still figuring out ways to make his music heard. On Tuesday (April 30), his team used his Instagram account to announce the coming of his Free M&M mixtape, a new project that was set to be released today—Melly's birthday. The up-and-coming star is accused of killing two of his friends — also rappers — then staging the murders as a drive-by shooting in the Miami area. Court resumes Tuesday at 9 a.m. Detective Mark Moretti resumed his testimony Tuesday. He was the only witness to testify Tuesday and the state said he is its last witness. Video from a YNW Melly documentary was played in court Tuesday morning showing the great bond between YNW Melly, YNW SakChaser, and YNW Juvy. Later in the afternoon, Detective Moretti read multiple pages of text messages outloud. The Case DetailsIn October 2018, YNW Melly’s best friend, Cortlen Henry, aka YNW Bortlen, showed up to a Miami area hospital claiming his friends were hit during a drive-by shooting. He said they were bleeding out inside his car, according to the rapper’s arrest affidavit.Williams, aka YNW Sakchaser, and Thomas, aka YNW Juvy, were found dead with multiple gunshot wounds. Henry told detectives he just left a recording studio with Williams and Thomas in Fort Lauderdale when a car pulled up and started shooting. As officers investigated, surveillance video showed Melly, Henry, Williams and Thomas together in Henry’s car when Henry claimed the shooting happened. After looking at phone data and blood spatter evidence, detectives determined the group were together the night of the crime and the victims were shot in the car.Police arrested Melly for two counts of first-degree murder in February 2019. The request was made during day four of the trial on June 15 and the motion for the mistrial submitted on June 16.There was also an issue of a juror questioning a bailiff about the mistrial motion before it was announced. The juror was then asked how they knew about the mistrial. The juror in question said they heard about the motion last week from a defense attorney and had not found out from outside media or independent research, which could have been grounds to have the juror removed.
