Despite Friday the 13th being an incredibly lucrative franchise, the series hasn’t received a new movie in over a decade. This is due to an ongoing legal battle between Miller and Cunningham. Miller tried using The Copyright Act of 1976 to reclaim the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise since it's been over 35 years since he wrote the script for the first movie. Cunningham is arguing that Miller was an employee, so he has no legal rights to the series. In 2018, the court decided in Miller’s favor granting him creative ownership, but Cunningham quickly filed for an appeal. They are also the complete set of films from the franchise to be released in the 1980s, with the eighth film dropping in 1989.
