I perfomed the paper clip test and I'm not sure if I have passed or failed. The psu fans spin for roughly 5 seconds then stops. Could someone explain to me if the test passed or failed and/or tell me what is a passing result for the test. Should the fans spin indefinitely until turned off? lvt Jun 28, 2021 Ok, thanks. Just to make sure I understand. My test failed because the fans stoped spinning rather quickly. The fans should spin until I intentionally turn off the power to the psu? That's correct for standard PSU.But some PSU have temperature controlled fans, the fans only spin if the sensor senses some heat. And there are PSU that only stay live if there is a load, otherwise they will stop after a few seconds. So you should use an ATX power tester, the tester will put some load on the PSU so it will run without a motherboard, even if the fans don't spin. Yeah, hadn't thought of that. I'll add that Molex fans are probably better for paperclip test. Spins all the time anyway. Also, I concur PSU tester is mighty handy. Locally I can get one for $7-8 (free shipping too!) and works wonders for troubleshooting since it saves so much time and effort. A colleague of mine have a prototype model from a DIYer --been years and the casing gave up before the tester itself does. Cheap tool to have that lasts long. #7 That's correct for standard PSU.But some PSU have temperature controlled fans, the fans only spin if the sensor senses some heat. And there are PSU that only stay live if there is a load, otherwise they will stop after a few seconds. So you should use an ATX power tester, the tester will put some load on the PSU so it will run without a motherboard, even if the fans don't spin. Ah I see. Alrighty I'll grab one tomorrow and update the post. I find it odd that my psu could be faulty as its only a year old. Corsair RM 650. It is still under warrenty. So hopefully this is the problem and I can get it replaced. I'll update the post with my findings. Thanks guys. #8 Was able to get a hold of a psu tester. The results are all fine. Guess I can rule out the power supply as the problem. Oct 18, 2006 27,224 3,274 112,240 #9 Only just seen this. The above was wrong, many modern PSU’s have a silent mode up to a certain load. So an initial spinning of the fan and then stopping is expected for a psu with a silent mode as the paper clip test puts zero

Load on the psu. You really need to measure the voltages when the paper clip is inserted regardless of the fan spinning. However the paper clip test cannot prove a psu is working. It can only show if a psu is probably dead. Just because a psu works with the paper clip does not mean it will work when in a pc as the paper clip test does not prove the psu can deliver the correct voltages under operating loads. If the psu is completely unresponsive when you perform the paper clip you can assume the psu is dead. So the paper clip test is of very limited usefulness. Oct 11, 2014 38,327 4,093 146,290 #12 Remember to always just see if a fresh CMOS battery on the motherboardwill solve the "PSU won't start" problem. Also with many newer PSUs, theunit will "play dead" with just the paperclip test without a realload/motherboard connected. Advertising Cookies Policies Privacy Term & Conditions Topics

Lives. There’s the designer furniture half that’s associated with a number of iconic mid-century modern designers, and there’s the office furniture half that’s credited with popularizing ergonomic desk chairs. The Zeph is the first chair to really meld these two halves together, and it does so at a price point lower than almost every other office chair Herman Miller makes. You won’t find that Herman Miller stamp on a cheaper office chair.Johnny BraysonOur tester has spent a couple of months working in the Zeph, and he’s definitely a fan. The chair is, frankly, hard not to like. Its looks are striking and quirky but not so out there that they’re going to look out of place in any home office setting (it’s also available in a dizzying number of color combinations). The “Kinematic Monoshell” structure gives you a classic Shell Chair look but has a built-in ergonomic recline that moves as you move, with basically no effort required. It’s extremely fluid (though definitely feels like you’re falling the first couple of times it kicks in), and with it, our tester never felt the need to adjust any tilt mechanism (there isn’t one anyway). Ergonomic, flexible back aside, the Zeph still isn’t the comfiest office chair in existence. Even with the optional 3D Knit cover, there’s very little cushioning in the seat of the Zeph, and after 8 hours our tester was wishing for a seat cushion. He also says you should get the armless version — the optional arms are too low for most people to use and aren’t adjustable, so they just end up getting in the way. For an in-depth look, read our review of the Herman Miller Zeph Chair.Herman Miller Sayl Cam Oden Best Affordable Herman Miller Office ChairHerman Miller Sayl ProsY-frame provides excellent supportEasy to adjustConsDesign of the chair might not suit everyoneDesigner Yves Behar based the Sayl on suspension bridges like San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Our tester found that the chair’s Y-frame back and ventilated elastomer provide both support and ventilation, which is why the Sayl earned numerous design awards after it was released in 2010. However, the chair’s back isn’t all positive, as its large holes proved a little too good at catching things during our testing, as our tester who lost a button from the back of his pants after standing up quickly in the chair can attest. The Sayl is also easy to adjust for even more personalized support. Although the unique design may not be for everyone, for Herman Miller, the chair’s $695 price tag is practically a steal. “For Herman Miller, the chair’s $695 price tag is practically a steal.”Photo by Cam Oden for Gear PatrolFlexispot BS7 Ergonomic Office Chair Flexispot Best Mesh Office ChairFlexiSpot Ergonomic Office Chair BS7 $329.99 (37% off) ProsMesh back and seat made from temperature-regulating fabricMoveable lumbar supportLots of adjustabilityConsLots of plastic in the body gives a cheaper feelA bit tricky to assembleFrom the makers of some of the best standing desks and standing desk converters you
