It has been over ten years since James Cameron's Avatar first hit theaters and went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Audiences were taken to the world of Pandora, a beautiful moon and home to the blue humanoid species known as the Na'vi. Due to the aggressive expansion of a human mining colony on Pandora, the Na'vi were forced to fight for their survival. The 2009 sci-fi epic concluded on an interesting note, one that left the door open for multiple sequels. Taking place more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water brings back old characters while also introducing some new ones. During the time gap, Jake Sully has started a family with Neytiri, who will be at the heart of the entire Avatar franchise. The Sully family will come into contact with both Na'vi and humans alike as they fight to keep each other safe. Here are the returning members of, as well as the new additions to, the cast of Avatar: The Way of Water. Returning: Sam Worthington 20th Century Studios At the end of Avatar, Jake Sully's consciousness was permanently transferred into his avatar body. Sam Worthington has been confirmed to return, once again having a leading role. After the release of Avatar, Worthington appeared in the 2010 fantasy film, Clash of the Titans, and its 2012 sequel, Wrath of the Titans. He also recently starred in the true crime drama series, Under the Banner of Heaven, with Andrew Garfield. Outside of film, Worthington has been widely recognized for playing Alex Mason in the Call of Duty: Black Ops video game franchise. He has credited Avatar for changing his life after having had to audition when he was still living in his car (via TheThings). New: Kate Winslet Warner Bros. Television Distribution Kate Winslet has joined the Avatar: The Way of Water cast as a new Na'vi character named Ronal. Ronal is a diver, and during filming, Winslet set a new record for the longest time an actor has held their breath underwater (via IndieWire). She managed to hold her breath for "seven minutes and 14 seconds," surpassing Tom Cruise's record of six and a half minutes for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Be seen preparing for an epic battle despite still carrying a child in her womb. Her fierce loyalty to her family members and a deep desire to protect them from any and all threats, so she's quite a lot like Neytiri in that sense, but she also initially has a difficult time accepting the on-the-run Sully clan into her home. Cliff Curtis as Tonowari Image via 20th Century Studios It's quite common for people to get James Cameron's Avatar films confused with the unrelated hit Nickelodeon show, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Still, in something of a funny coincidence Cliff Curtis, who played Firelord Ozai in M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 adaptation of The Last Airbender (which is a movie that is clearly unanimously loved by all) will be joining the cast of James Cameron's upcoming film as Tonowari. Tonowari is the chief of the Metkayina Clan, serving along with his wife and partner Ronal. This makes Tonowari the father of Tsireya and Aonung and the patriarch of the Metkayina people. Chief Tonowari's role predictably provides him full control of the reefs of Pandora, essentially making him the king of the planet's seas. Tonowari also has noticeable face tattoos marking his status as a leader and warrior, and Curtis himself has said that both his character and the Metkayinan culture are heavily inspired by real-life Maori culture. Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Avatar: The Way of Water James Cameron was essential in helping to solidify the careers of two of the greatest actresses working today. While Zoe Saldaña had appeared in a few notable projects before she was cast as Neytiri in Avatar, it was the motion-capture role that showed the world that she could bring emotional authenticity to an action-packed science fiction epic. Similarly, Kate Winslet was already a proven talent by the time she appeared in Titanic, but it was the role of Rose that transformed her into a global superstar. Avatar: The Way of Water teases an interesting proposal; what would it be like if these two screen legends got to team up? Unfortunately, it’s a pairing that we never really get to see. Neytiri and Ronal Have More In Common Than They Think Both Saldaña and Winslet are doing interesting work in The Way of Water, and they both got to show off their versatility. Saldaña had to mature a character that she had helped create over a decade prior and had to show her strength and resilience as a mother. Winslet had never done any major motion capture work before, and The Way of Water allowed her to take part in the science fiction genre, which, sadly, she only rarely gets involved in. Both Neytiri and Ronal have justified perspectives on both motherhood and leadership, but for the sake of the plot, The Way of Water insists on setting them up as enemies. Seemingly, Neytiri and Ronal should be able to find a common cause. Neytiri is fiercely protective of her children and chastises them for going against her orders and exploring dangerous areas. Ronal is similarly strict in her orders to her children. Both characters are strong believers in the sanctity of their homes; Neytiri is absolutely devastated when she is forced to leave the Hometree and the forest behind her as the Sully family flees, and Ronal has a deep connection to the aquatic life in the great barrier reefs. Sadly, these two don’t get the chance to

On September 27, seven child actors were confirmed as a part of the main cast including Geljo: Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton and Trinity Bliss as the children of Jake and Neytiri, Geljo, Bailey Bass, and Duane Evans Jr. as members of the Metkayina (together with Curtis), and Jack Champion, the only one to perform in live action, as a human born on Pandora. Cameron later stated that the child cast had been trained for six months to prepare for the underwater scenes filmed in performance capture, and that they now could all hold their breath "in the two- to four-minute range", even then-seven-year-old Trinity Bliss, and were now "all perfectly capable of acting underwater, very calmly while holding their breath".On October 3, 2017, it was reported that Kate Winslet, who starred in Cameron's Titanic (1997), had joined the cast of Avatar 2, and possibly its sequels. Cameron commented, "Kate and I had been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career", and added that her character was named Ronal. Huntress in her clan, and Ronal’s connection to the animals gives her an advantage in combat. However, they’re once again set to the side in a finale that focuses more on the younger characters. Earlier in the film, there’s a brief moment where Kiri simply scoffs as both Neytiri and Ronals’ sons get into a brawl. Her opinion is clear; men are primal in nature, and they can’t be trusted with leadership. It’s a lesson that both Neytiri and Ronal know very well, but sadly, these two mothers are spared from each other’s company.
