That's a big deal for sports fans in the extended Pittsburgh area, which includes Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and portions of New York, Ohio and Maryland.“We are thrilled to announce this deal with fuboTV and give fans even more options to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Penguins in their home market,” Nina Kinch, Vice President of Affiliate Relations for AT&T Sports Networks, said in a press release. “Both teams have enormous fan bases and we have had a lot of demand to bring these teams to OTT providers. We are very excited that customers will now have that option with fuboTV.”The addition brings more than 225 live regular-season Pittsburgh Pirates (that's Major League Baseball) and Pittsburgh Penguins (that's the NHL) games to the streaming service.“In talking with many fans over the past year, a recurring theme I have heard is the strong desire for expanded streaming options to watch our games, especially among families and young professionals,” said Travis Williams, President, Pittsburgh Pirates. “We appreciate AT&T’s SportsNet and fuboTV reaching an agreement to bring this additional option to our fans. Now family members who are seemingly constantly on the run and others that want to watch our games from any device, anywhere within our home territory have another option to do so.”The only catch? (Photo By Raymond Boyd/Getty Images)Getty ImagesFollowing the decision by the Sinclair Broadcast Group SBGI subsidiary, the Diamond Sports Group, owner of the 19 Bally Sports RSN’s, not to pay a $140 million debt payment and, likely, declare bankruptcy. Another RSN could be defaulting on its payments.According to the Wall Street Journal, late last month AT&T SportsNet, an RSN operating in Denver, Houston and Pittsburgh sent a letter to eight teams they televise, notifying them the business will not have sufficient cash to pay the upcoming rights fees. The RSN wants to transfer ownership to the teams, with the potential AT&T SportsNet will declare bankruptcy. The teams impacted are the MLBs Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates; the NBAs Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz; the NHLs Pittsburgh Penguins and Vegas Golden Knights. Reportedly the NBA, NHL and MLB were also notified. (AT&T SportsNet also owns a 40% stake in Seattle’s Root Sports that televises MLB’s Seattle Mariners, NHL’s Seattle Kraken and NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers which are, for the moment, not impacted.)The RSN is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery WBD , it was part of last year’s acquisition of the AT&T owned WarnerMedia by Discovery Communications. In a statement to Sports Business Journal WBD noted, “We will continue to engage in private conversations with our partners as we seek to identify reasonable and constructive solutions.” It was also reported that if an agreement to transfer ownership is not reached by the end of March, the only realistic choice is to file for Chapter 7 liquidation. With the 2023 MLB regular season beginning on March 30, the decision could negatively impact their revenue needs. Not too long ago, RSNs were a lucrative and consistent business model, with revenue coming from both high subscriber fees and ratings that, at times, exceeded broadcast television. With cord-cutting and growth of streaming, however, RSNs are no longer providing steady revenue flow. In another statement, WBD said, “AT&T SportsNet is not immune to the well-known challenges that the entire RSN industry is facing.”Paul Pastor, Chief Business Officer and co-founder at Quickplay says via email, “Regional sports companies are feeling the impact of two major trends: first, consumers are increasingly migrating to digital, direct-to-consumer platforms, and second, cable companies, no longer having local market monopoly power, can no longer force consumers to accept a hard bundle for services they don’t watch, especially expensive sports programming channels that very few consumers watch. This is forcing cable companies to push back on fees and carriage, resulting in a “reconning” for RSNs that have not prepared for this eventuality.”Since the acquisition, the newly formed WBD has been looking to slash its $50 billion debt. The media company has used such cost-cutting strategies as personnel layoffs, hiring freezes and has slashed programming budgets. Nonetheless, in

The Golden Knights’ plan with their new local TV partner is simple: Make it as easy as possible for fans to watch their games. That’s the goal of the multiyear agreement they announced with Scripps Sports on Thursday during an event at Circa Resort. The deal will put the majority of the team’s preseason, regular-season and first-round playoff games on local station KMCC-34.That station is available on cable, satellite and over-the-air TV. The Knights are also working on a direct-to-consumer option. KMCC-34 is currently airing ION content but will rebrand as an independent station before next season to show local and national news, local sports and entertainment programming. Some Knights games will also be simulcast on KTNV-13, which Scripps Sports’ parent company owns.Owner Bill Foley believes this setup can help turn his vision of being “the team of the Rockies” into more of a reality. He said the Knights, in their previous home on AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain, were only reaching 35 percent of households in Las Vegas and nine percent in Salt Lake City. The team wants to give more fans the chance to see it on TV. It believes this partnership accomplishes that. Financial terms were not disclosed.“Whatever type of fan you are, you’re going to be able to get the games and get them for free,” Knights president Kerry Bubolz said. The Knights’ search for a new local TV home took months once Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns AT&T SportsNet, told them it was pulling out of their agreement early.Foley did
