SQL Server Compact 4.0 and WebMatrix· Default database for Microsoft WebMatrix: Compact 4.0 is the default database for Microsoft WebMatrix, which is the web stack that encapsulates all the technologies like ASP.NET, IIS Express, Editor and SQL Server Compact that are needed to develop, test and deploy ASP.NET websites to third party website hosting providers.· Rapid website development with free, open source web applications: Popular open source web applications like mojoPortal, Orchard, Umbraco etc. support Compact 4.0 and can be used to rapidly develop, test and deploy websites. · One click migration to SQL Server: As the requirements grow to the level of enterprise databases, the schema and data can be migrated from Compact to SQL Server using the migrate option in the WebMatrix IDE. Microsoft has released WebMatrix 3, the latest version of its free web development tool. The new version now comes with deeper Windows Azure integration and support for GitHub.WebMatrix users can now sign in through Windows Azure and create up to 10 sites for free. The capability means users can manage their sites locally or in Windows Azure.In WebMatrix 3, developers can do remote editing of their sites. It has a new visual site gallery that allows the user to open existing sites on their local machines, or to remotely edit sites that are hosted in Windows Azure.According to the Windows Azure blog, one of the most requested features users wanted improved upon from WebMatrix 2 was support for version control software:Following the TFS and Visual Studio announcements to support Git version control, WebMatrix 3 supports both Git and TFS. For example, change the title to Movies - Updated.Click the Publish button in the ribbon. WebMatrix determines what's changed and shows you a preview of the files it will publish.ImportantBy default, WebMatrix publishes your database (.sdf file) only the first time you publish the site. Once your site is published and people are interacting with the website, the database on the live site typically has the site's real data. You have to be very careful not to overwrite the live database with the .sdf file that's on your computer, which usually contains only test data. That's why you see the warning Publishing will overwrite any remote databases, and why the check box for WebPagesMovies.sdf is cleared by default.Click Continue. WebMatrix publishes the changed files and shows you a success message, like it did the first time you published.Go to the live site (you can click the link in the success message if it's still showing) and verify that your change has been published.TipEditing Files RemotelyAs an alternative to changing your site and then republishing, you can edit remote files directly in WebMatrix. In this scenario, you open a file that's on the service provider, and WebMatrix downloads a copy of it for you to edit. Every time you save the file, WebMatrix sends the changes to the site.Remote editing is an easy way to make changes to your live site. However, the changes you make this way aren't synchronized with the files in your local site. To synchronize the local files with the remote site, you can download the remote files.
