(no need for ActiveStorage, AWS S3…)According to the docs: .create_doc returns a pdf string .create_hosted_doc returns a URL to the hosted documentSo we simply replace create_doc with create_hosted_doc:- response = DocRaptor::DocApi.new.create_doc(+ response = DocRaptor::DocApi.new.create_hosted_doc(+ invoice.update(pdf_url: response.download_url)We can add a new attribute like pdf_url to our Invoice and update it.That’s it: now DocRaptor replaced both ActiveStorage and our cloud storage provider! 8. I often design PDFs for emailing tickets, invoices, certificates, reports. Heck, I even had the whole business idea of building CertificateOwl that is centered around generating and sending PDFs!Todays mission: “When an invoice is created, generate a PDF and email it to the client”. Example:How would you do that?Usually I would: generate PDF from HTML with gem wicked_pdf store the PDF with ActiveStorage send the PDF with ActionMailerBut there’s a problem: 1. 💀 Gem WickedPDF is dead. # Since 2015 I have always relied on the gem wicked_pdf for generating PDFs out of my HTML templates. With wicked_pdf, we could design an app/views/invoices/show.pdf.erb HTML document, and format.pdf would render more-less what we designed. Designing PDFs felt like WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). However in 2023 the underlying technology behind this gem, wkhtmltopdf, has been archived. This means that gem "wicked_pdf" is no longer recommended for any new projects. In fact, we should consider replacing it in existing projects! 2. So, what are the alternatives? # Gem DocRaptor - ruby API wrapper around the advanced Prince HTML-to-PDF technology. Gem Prawn - DSL to script PDF documents with plain Ruby. Gem Ferrum - virtual “headless” browser opens a page in “Print”/”Save to PDF” view. While Prawn and Ferrum offer fundamentally different approaches to generating PDF, I think DocRaptor might be the the best “plug-and-play” replacement for wicked_pdf, because it uses the same technological principle (HTML-to-PDF).I think that CSS Paged Media is the killer feature of DocRaptor/Prince technology: it allows us to have maximum CSS control of what is rendered on a single PDF page.By the way, I first casually heard about DocRaptor on IndieRails Podcast: Matt Gordon - Going from Consulting to Products. Let’s give it a try! 3. PDF ConvertersWe believe DocRaptor is the highest-quality, fastest, and most cost-effective PDF conversion tool. But you don’t have to take our word for it–do your own research. Start with these questions:Can you reuse an existing HTML document?Does it use JavaScript? If you have a raw HTML document already, obviously, an HTML-to-PDF conversion saves you time and energy. And if you need JavaScript support, you’ll want to use DocRaptor, PrinceXML, or a browser-based library. Is your document long or complex?A mostly text-based or one-page document can be created with almost any PDF conversion engine. But documents with complex layouts, dynamic references (such as indexes or table of contents), lots of charts or images, varying headers or page sizes, etc, can be difficult in many libraries. To save development time, test the most complex parts of your document first. How much development and maintenance can you afford? There is a wide discrepancy in feature support and bug-free operation between different converters. Maintaining a high-scale infrastructure can be costly as PDFs are slow and CPU-intensive to generate (compared to web pages). Compare the development time and maintenance costs of your PDF conversion options early in your selection process. How much support do you need? After answering the above questions, you should have a good understanding of the level of support you require. Selecting a PDF converter API with an expert support team—like DocRaptor—can dramatically speed up your implementation timelines.Frequently Asked QuestionsIf you don't find what you're looking for, don't hesitate to reach out to our support team. You for the quick response "--no-subset-fonts" option worked for us. We have fixed this issue in the latest builds and font subsetting should work correctly with PDF Forms now. First off, this is an amazing add and will save us a lot of time.Quick feature request, could it also read the html "type" attribute and create applicable PDF fields based on that? Such as input type="date" making a "Date" field in the PDF and input type="number" using number formatting by default (Bonus points for reading the min, max and pattern attributes as well for this!). Would also like to replicate the native "Digital Signature" field you can add in Acrobat if possible. Thanks! I think that's possible but it might need to a wait a while, PDF doesn't seem to have specific field types so dates and numbers are implemented via AcroJS extensions. Can we set font settings for PDF form fields? Specifically I would like to set the "Auto" font size so text autoscales to fit inside the field in case the content runs long. Just noticed the documentation page has a typo. -prince-pdf-form: enabled; should be -prince-pdf-form: enable; Was banging my head for 15 minutes on that one!
